How to prepare for a HubSpot Interview

5 mins

The dreaded interview...whether it’s your first HubSpot job or your next step to climbing the ladder, interviews can be nerve-wracking. But unfortunately, there’s no way to escape them.

Interviews are an essential aspect of job hunting, so although they are not everyone’s favourite, knowing how to prepare and conduct yourself in an interview will be crucial. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to the HubSpot space or have years of experience; you’re never too far ahead in your career to learn more about interview preparation.

whether they give you the heebiegeebies or you feel that you need a refresher on preparing for a future HubSpot interview, this blog will give you all the tips and tricks you need to succeed and get that dream HubSpot job.

In-House and Agency Interviews

There are two routes you can go down when looking for a HubSpot role: in-house or agency.

Most interviews for in-house and agency HubSpot roles will follow the typical interview format; ask about your previous experience(s), your strengths and weaknesses, what makes you best for the role, etc. though some employers may have their own format or way of conducting the interview.

However, the difference you’ll see is when it comes to providing evidence of why you would be right for the job.

For an in-house interview, you may be asked to describe a time you had to solve a CRM-related problem, the steps you took to remedy that, and the procedures you put in place to ensure it didn’t happen again. As for an agency interview, you could still be asked that. But instead of just describing your scenario, you can be expected to re-enact a scenario itself (depending on the position you apply for.)

The employer will act as the client looking for assistance with their HubSpot CRM, you’ll be asked to go through the stages of how you would assist to meet their needs. The reason for this is to ensure that you have the skills to communicate with the client effectively and (of course) that you have the expert knowledge needed to succeed.

Takeaway: in-house interviews are more conversational, and agency more scenario-based.

How to prepare

HubSpot Academy

It’s easy to blank on skills and techniques when preparing for interview questions (we’ve all done it at some point) so having a refresh or crash course isn’t going to hurt. Even if you have years of HubSpot experience under your belt, you’re never too far ahead to refresh your CRM skills and HubSpot Academy is a great tool for your interview preparation.

Plus, as HubSpot grows and adds new updates more regularly you’ll be sure that you are up to date with the latest software and practices giving you full confidence in your abilities and answers.

Learn who will interview you

Finding out who will be conducting the interview(s) is always a good move. Not only will it give you a face to the name, but you can go in feeling more comfortable about who you will be speaking to. It will also help you to go in more prepared and show your interest in the people who work there.

At Steadman Hub, we would ensure that you are aware of those who would be conducting the interview, but we still suggest that you do your research through LinkedIn to find out more about them.

Research the business in depth

This one is a bit of a doozy but research the business in depth. Going into an interview without understanding their expertise, core values, or history isn’t going to look good on you. Employers are looking for someone who shows professionalism and enthusiasm for the company and the role itself, so going in without prior knowledge will be a huge disadvantage for you.

And don’t leave it till the last minute. An employer can pick up quite easily when a candidate hasn’t done their research, so give yourself plenty of time; plus, don’t forget to look at the latest news/press coverage or blogs as they can provide some interesting facts and details.

Practice your interview questions

The thought of doing a pretend interview with someone you know can feel a little embarrassing, but it’s a tactic that can work highly in your favour. There’s nothing worse than fumbling over questions and then feeling humiliated. Practicing your answers will give you more confidence to deliver your answers.

Remember, not every interview will follow the same format but there are questions that every employer may ask at some point including;

  • What are your strengths/weaknesses?
  • What skills/experience do you have that will help you succeed in this role?
  • Tell me about yourself, how did you progress into HubSpot/job title?

If you’re in the HubSpot agency space, this will also be the perfect opportunity to practice when it comes to your scenario-based section of the interview.

Have questions ready

Have you ever left an interview and then thought of a question you should have asked them? We guess that you’ve answered yes.

It’s happened to everyone at some point, so instead of thinking on the spot why not take the time to prepare some questions you can ask the employers? But if you have no idea of what you could ask, here are some suggestions:

  • What opportunities are there to progress in this company and what support can I expect if needed?
  • How will my success be measured?
  • What do you like about working at this company?
  • What are the next steps after this interview?

Top Tips

Dress to Impress

Firstly, get a feel for the company through their socials; are they more formal or laid back? Avoid light-coloured jeans, dirty/worn-out trainers, hoodies, etc. Dark colours are best, and make sure your make-up and/or hair is neat.

Test your technology

Doing a virtual interview? Check everything is working properly beforehand. Ensure you are in an area with good internet coverage and avoid doing it on your phone if possible.

Don’t be too relaxed

An interview is a formal process, and being too relaxed can look unprofessional. Even if you’ve met the interviewers before or have been told it’s informal, keep composure. Still, be friendly and participate in small talk when necessary.

Take your notes with you

Some employers may allow you to take notes with you into the interview, but if that’s not the case still bring them with you. You’ll be able to go over them while you wait or on your commute if you travel by bus or train.

Body language

You could give perfect answers, but your body language could let you down. Sit up straight and try not to slouch. Also, ensure that you’re not fidgeting too much as it can come across as it can come across as you being nervous, and be quite distracting for both you and the interviewers.

Remember, interviews can be to your advantage

It’s easy to assume that an interview is more advantageous for the employer as they’re the ones who advertise for the position. But really, they’re just as or more beneficial for you.

An interview isn’t just to prove your skills and ability in completing the role successfully, but for the employer to showcase why you should work for them. It will give you more insight into the business, the role, and opportunities for you to progress, and to get a feeling for the people. You need to know you’re going to like the people you’d potentially work with.

But even if you’re not successful there can still be advantages. You can:

  • Learn from mistakes made for your next interview, rejection is redirection!
  • Gain insight into specific sectors (if you’re leaning toward certain areas)
  • Build your confidence when answering questions and giving examples
  • Figure out exactly what it is you want from your next HubSpot role and the type of business you want to work for

Conclusion

Interviews are a nerve-wracking experience for some, even for those who have been to countless interviews over the years. However, preparing and ensuring that you are fully equipped will ensure that your interview is successful leading you to your dream HubSpot role.

Although our tips and guidance will give you sound and secure ways to prepare, finding what works for you is the most important step.
